Health Promotion

I learned about the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Triple Aim. The triple aim's goal is to improve the client's experience of care, improve the health of populations, and reduce the cost of health care per capita. OT's role in the triple aim is to advocate for occupational therapist to be more involved in primary care and community based practice. OT's goal is also to attempt to improve the health of populations. OT's can education on health prevention and health literacy. Health literacy is the ability for someone to understand medical health information and be able to make health decisions based on the information given.

I also learned about interventions that try to prevent risks to health. Primary intervention is the prevent the disease before it even occurs. It could happen through education for example. Secondary intervention could reduce the risk or impact of a disease through catching it early through screenings, and trying to prevent the chance of the disease getting worse. Tertiary intervention is when a disease or injury is already present, but you try to diminish the lasting effects.
