How can you climb a rope without a pinky?

Thank goodness the wife stepped in the room so the solider wouldn’t lose his pinky. If the solider would have lost the bet, he would have not only lost his pinky, but he also would have lost a lot of his grip strength. The pinky is a small digit, but has a really important job. Range of motion and mobility in the fingers increases as you progress towards the ulnar side of the hand, when in flexion. The pinky allows for better hand closer and a stronger, stable grip. One occupation that would be hindered is if the solider were to have to climb a rope while in combat. When climbing a rope, you would use a power grip and need a lot of grip strength. If the solider were to have lost the bet, he wouldn’t have as firm of a grip and therefore, wouldn’t have as much speed. The pinky is such an important digit in the power grip. Without the pinky, the solider wouldn't be able to hold onto the rope with as strong of a grip as he did before the bet.  A modification the solider could use, would be to wear a hand gripper. If the solider were to wear a bumpy, gripping glove when climbing, he would be able to have a better hold of the rope and increase his speed. The solider would regain independence by being able to climb the rope with the other soldiers.

  1. You're so right - the pinky is much more important than people may realize! Use grippy gloves is a great modification, he could even get grippy shoes to wear that could assist him in climbing!

  3. Laurel, great thinking on modifying this activity! The pinky finger plays such an important role in grip strength. Grippy gloves would allow him the independence he needed to climb ropes.

  4. Great blog post Laurel! I hadn't even thought about how difficult it would be to climb a rope without a pinky. The modification of hand gripper would be a great way for him to maintain this occupation.

  5. I would have never thought of this activity! This is a very important activity for a soldier. I love how you modified this activity. The gripper glove would be a great way for him to still be independent and not be worried while climbing the ropes.

  6. Wow, such a great idea! By using the gripping gloves, the soldier would not have to worry about falling from tall heights. I am not good at climbing a rope, so maybe I should try using gripping gloves, too!

  7. Laurel, I love the idea about the gripper gloves! With the use of the gloves, the soldier can also work on re-building strength and adjusting his grip now that he doesn't have a pinky. Great idea!
